IAM Members Flood Capitol Phone Lines to Defeat Bad Health Care Bill
Thanks to efforts by Machinists and others who flooded Congress with phone calls at a ratio of well over 50 to 1 opposing the misguided Americans Health Care Act (AHCA), working people prevented it from coming to a vote in the House of Representatives.
Last week as legislators considered the AHCA, the IAM urged our members to contact their members of Congress and tell them to vote NO on the deeply flawed repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“The AHCA gives tax credits to the wealthy, yet taxes working families,” said IAM International President Bob Martinez in a letter to Congress. “The wealthy will have their taxes cut on investment income, but workers will have to pay increased costs on their health insurance due to the continuation of the so-called ‘Cadillac’ tax.”
The AHCA would have also caused 24 million Americans to lose their health care coverage in the next decade and would have increased premiums an average of 15 to 20 percent, with older Americans paying substantially more.
After hearing from thousands of constituents who believe all Americans should have quality, affordable health care, dozens of Republican lawmakers decided to listen to them and not be pressured by party leaders and the President. The latest estimates show nearly 60,000 calls opposing the bill and just over 1,100 in support.
