IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Robert Roach, Jr., has appointed Maria Roeper as Director and Counsel of the newly-formed IAM Health and Welfare Programs Department, effective November 1, 2014.

Roeper, a healthcare law expert, has served as IAM Assistant General Counsel since 2010. Previously, she spent three years organizing in the healthcare industry. Roeper started the Worker Rights Consortium, an international anti-sweatshop monitoring non-profit organization.

“The Affordable Care Act has increased the issues unions face with respect to health and welfare programs,” said Roach. “Maria will direct and manage both ongoing matters and issues as they arise related to IAM health and welfare programs, policies and related service providers.”

“Maria’s expertise in the healthcare industry make her the perfect choice for this position,” said IAM General Vice President Dora Cervantes. “She will provide valuable insight to our members covered by these programs.”

Roeper holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Haverford College, Haverford, PA; a Master of Public Policy from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD; and graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland School of Law, Baltimore, MD.
