Machinists Union, IndustriALL Welcome New Independent Mexican Union Federation

The IAM was well represented at a recent IndustriALL Global Union meeting in Mexico City.

Owen Herrnstadt, Chief of Staff to the International President and Director of Globalization, and Macario Camorlinga, Grand Lodge Representative, were in attendance for the IAM. The meeting heralded the formation of the future Federation of Independent Automotive, Auto Parts, Aerospace and Tire Unions in Mexico.

Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, the President of the Miners Union and a new senator in the Mexican government who was only recently permitted to travel back to his home country, opened the meeting. He emphasized the need for change in Mexico, including the elimination of company unions, the assurance of free and independent unions and the ratification of International Labor Organization Conventions.

“The IAM has supported the formation of free and independent unions in Mexico for many years,” said IAM International President Bob Martinez “This initial meeting is an important step forward in making sure that Mexico’s workers can at long last enjoy fundamental human rights.”
