IAM Fighting Military Base Closures

IAM members are working to defeat the McCain-Reed Base Closure Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, a reckless proposal that would close military bases across our country.

Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) affects IAM members working on government installations including government employees and those working under service contracts. Many of those IAM members are veterans themselves.

IAM International President Bob Martinez issued the following statement opposing the McCain-Reed Base Closure Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act:

“The Machinists Union (IAM) is strongly opposed to the McCain-Reed Base Closure Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This amendment would devastate local communities and displace workers. This amendment would be an economic disaster during a time of constrained budgets and intense global uncertainty. We need to protect these communities, not deliver a crushing blow to their local economies. The IAM will stand with the local communities and working families to fight against these unnecessary base closings.”

IAM International President Martinez also sent a letter to Congress opposing the McCain-Reed Base Closure Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.
